Post-study work visa: which country gives you the best chance to stay?

The headline number — 'how many years of post-study work can I get?' — is less useful than people think. What matters is conversion rate: of students who start on the post-study visa, how many actually convert to a longer-term stay?

Germany: 18 months job-seeker visa, Blue Card route after. Conversion is high for career-aligned graduates.

Ireland: 2 years stay-back, Critical Skills Permit after. Conversion is strong.

UK: 2 years Graduate Visa, Skilled Worker Visa after. Salary thresholds rose in 2024; conversion is now harder than it used to be.

Canada: PGWP (1–3 years), Express Entry after. 2024 tightening has reduced conversion rates for many courses — pick carefully.

Australia: 2–4 years depending on city; strong structural hiring in healthcare and data.

US: OPT + STEM extension = 3 years, but H-1B lottery caps conversion around 20–25% for most applicants.

If staying matters to you, rank by conversion rate, not visa length.
